In the wake of the tragic events in Newtown, CT – just fifty miles from campus – members of the Vassar community gathered yesterday in silence for a candlelight vigil, seeking and providing support in each other’s company. Over this weekend, there will be continued opportunities to gather and find support in residential houses and at the pre-exam “midnight breakfast” at the All-Campus Dining Center Sunday night from 10 to 11:30.
This tragedy presents a challenge to our ability to comprehend and affects members of our community in a variety of ways, known and unknown. We have reached out to those with homes in the Newtown area, but there may be others in need whom we have missed. If you or a friend needs counseling or support, contact the Campus Response Center at 437-5221, and they can connect you with the counselor on call. There is also a link to resources at the counseling service website. For those able to join us for the “midnight breakfast”, there will be a moment of silence and brief remarks at 11 p.m. Sunday.
We express our deepest sympathy with the people of Newtown and with all the family and friends of those who lost their lives. May we collectively find the wisdom and will to counter the tragedy of gun violence in our society.
Cappy Hill, President
