Services

If you would like to meet with a counselor, call extension 5700 (or 437-5700, for those calling from off-campus), or stop by Metcalf House and speak with the receptionist. An initial appointment will be scheduled for you.

When you come to the Counseling Service for the first time, you will be asked to complete a confidential general information form, which takes about five minutes. During the initial consultation with a counselor, you will have a chance to talk about the difficulties that you face. Based on the information presented, the counselor will make recommendations that may include individual or group counseling, further evaluation, or referral to other services on- or off-campus. Some students find that the initial consultation meets their needs and require no further services.

Individual Therapy/Counseling

The Counseling Service offers confidential short-term individual counseling. The details and course of counseling are worked out jointly by the student and the counselor. Short-term counseling allows the student to work on the immediate difficulties and come to a resolution.

If further therapy or counseling is required, an appropriate referral will be made.

Crisis Intervention

While residence halls are open, the Counseling Service maintains a 24-hour on-call crisis response capability.

By calling the Counseling Service at ext. 5700 (437-5700 for off-campus students) during office hours, or the Campus Response Center at ext. 7333 (437-7333 from off-campus) after hours, a student in crisis may arrange to speak with a counselor.

Students should convey that they wish to speak with the Counselor-On-Call. Callers should be aware that calls made to the CRC are logged routinely as part of the emergency system and are thus not as private as calls made directly to the Counseling Service.

Groups

Support groups provide a forum where students who share a common identity or concern can meet to discuss experiences and support one another.

Group therapy provides an opportunity for small groups of students to meet under the guidance of one or two counselors to facilitate personal growth by sharing common concerns, exploring personal issues, and learning new interpersonal skills. Groups are typically formed at the beginning of the semester and usually meet once a week for about 90 minutes.

Both support and therapy groups are confidential in nature. Group participants are expected to maintain the confidentiality of all group members.

To join a group, students need to contact the Counseling Service at extension 5700 for an appointment, as an initial interview with the counselor leading the group is usually required.

Visit the groups page to view our new and existing groups for the school year.

Psychiatric Services

Limited psychiatric services are available at the Counseling Service.

Richard Hahn, MD serves as the consulting psychiatrist for the Counseling Service.

A referral by a Metcalf counselor is necessary to consult with Dr. Hahn. While working with Dr. Hahn, the student must continue working with a counselor at Metcalf. A limited number of psychiatric sessions is available, after which a referral to a private psychiatrist can be made.
