Straddling Worlds: Exploring Life as a First-Generation College Student

When: 3:15 to 4:30 p.m.

Entering college is an exciting time, but for students who are the first in their family to go to college it can also be an especially stressful transition to make. First-generation college students face unique academic, social, and emotional challenges as they navigate higher education for the first time. Often first-generation students struggle to balance the demands of being a family member along with the expectations of college. If you are a first-gen student, it may feel as though you are straddling between two worlds: the world of academia and the world of family life. This group aims to provide a space to explore these challenges, as well as receive support and feedback from other students who share this experience. Call x5700 for an initial interview.

When: Day and time to be determined

Be it parent, friend, family member, or partner, the sense of loss can lead to challenging feelings, such as: sadness, uncertainties, anger, and isolation. And, it can potentially change the way we relate to others, as well as how others relate to us. This group creates a space for the student to share stories, struggles, and ways of healing, with others going through the grief process.
